The Romanian Ornithological Society (SOR) works for the study and protection of birds, their habitats and nature. Your support and contribution matters.
In 2002, the Romanian Ornithological Society started a project for the conservation and protection of the Pike Lake Nature Reserve. The project is financed by the Dutch fundations Stiching DOEN and EECONET and its main targets are:
maintaining the reserve's natural condition and values
expanding the area of the nature reserve in order to include the surrounding reed beds
improving nesting conditions for birds
raising public awareness among the people in nearby villages as well as visitors from around the country/world about the importance of the reserve
Activities in 2002:
analyzing flora and fauna in the area; the activity resulted in identifying a large number of species:
- 100 species of Birds (from which 30 species of waterfowl and birds depending on wetlands);
- 200 species of Plakton;
- 75 species of Vascular plants;
- 10 species of Fish;
- 11 species of Amphibians;
- 7 species of Reptiles;
taking the first steps for expanding the area of the reserve
The wetlands around the lake and reed beds surrounding it cover a total surface area of about 120 ha. In this respect, ROS has submitted a documentation to include the reed area in the nature reserve. This created an extended reserve with the lake as the most important component together with the adjacent reed beds.
From the begining, ROS has collaborated with the Local Councils in the villages of Fizesu Gherlii, and Sic. This lead to the Local Council in Fizesu Gherlii declaring the entire area of 120 ha as a protected area at the local level.
Activities in 2003:
raising public awareness among locals in the nearby villages and for visitors, presenting the importance of the reserve
distributing informative publications in order to underline the importance of the nature reserve
management of the reed bed
building a watchtower for ornithological studies
monitoring of bird species
printing 3000 presentation brochures
organizing an ecological camp for students
creating a management plan in cooperation with the local authorities
performing slide presentations in schools in the nearby villages
Proposed activities for 2004:
creating new habitats for various bird species and improving the existing breeding areas (the reed area upstream the lake)
posting information panels and road signs to facilitate access to the reserve
organizing an ecological camp for students and pupils from schools in villages surrounding the Pike Lake
performing slide presentations in schools in the nearby villages
public presentations in villages near the reserve
lectures at Babes-Bolyai University
printing A2 posters and leaflets
studies regarding vegetation and water quality
building a wooden trail through the reed bed
We would like to thank
the Local Councils in the villages of Fizesu Gherlii and Sic for their support and efforts in maintaining the natural conditions of the reserve
