Conserving Birds and Mammals on the Steppes of Dobrudja - Steppes 2004

The Rufford Small Grant (for Nature Conservation) in association with the Whitley Laing Foundation has recently approved a project at SOR that will contribute to the protection of three threatened bird species (Imperial Eagle Aquila heliaca, Lesser Kestrel Falco naumanni and Saker Falco cherrug) and more data gathered about select endemic mammals such as the European Souslik Spermophilus citellus and the Romanian Hamster Mesocricetus newtoni. This project will combine elements of research, training and public awareness to help improve conservation efforts in the steppes of Dobrudja area. Local conservationists will receive special training, and more public awareness materials will be produced. In order to ensure proper conservation measures, strong cooperation between NGOs, national institutions and the involvement of local stakeholders will be promoted throughout the project.
