Conserving the breeding population of Saker (Falco cherrug) in Romania
To further the conservation of the Saker, SOR will be gathering more information about this magnificent bird. In Romania the Saker is legally protected, mostly occurring in SE Romania (Dobrudja) in a few pairs. The only population with known figures and trends is the one breeding in the Danube Delta area, where a large-scale decline was noted in the last 30 years (from 50 breeding pairs to 5 pairs - Kiss JB pers. comm.). Main threats in the country are lack of nest sites, disturbance, electrocution, illegal hunting and poisoning. There is no information about its exact population figures, trends or habitat requirements. As a result of the project SOR and the local inhabitants will cooperate to develop a map of the existent suitable habitat for the Saker, as well as promote more public awareness about the species. Using the data gathered, SOR plans to determine as estimate of the number of existing breeding pairs. Also, twenty artificial nest platforms will be mounted in available habitats as a result of the project. Upon completion, SOR and the people of the Dobrudja area hopes to improve the conservation efforts for the Saker. Home | About SOR | News | SOR at work | Get involved | Helpful links | Contact us |
