Measures

In order to avoid situations favourable to the transmission of AI virus at both birds and humans, we must avoid:

•  letting domestic poultry roam freely in order to avoid contact with potentially infected wild birds (especially ducks) in common places: lakes, swamps or rivers;

•  leaving other domestic animals roam freely (especially pigs) – for the same reasons;

•  direct contact with dead birds which are suspected of contamination. Plastic gloves and face masks will be used. In this case it is compulsory to announce the nearest Sanitary-Veterinary Direction;

•  hunting, as it is one of the factors that allow direct contact between humans and wild birds that could be infected with the AI virus;

•  consuming chicken meat or eggs without previously cooking (thermically treating) them.

A campaign to correctly inform the public should be initiated as an important prevention measure; this way people will understand the matter and act accordingly.
