ROMANIAN SPOONBILLS MIGRATE TO A DISTANCE OF 4.000 KM!

3-07-2004: The Romanian Ornithological Society, in cooperation with the Danube Delta National
Research and Development Institute and the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve Authority (ARBDD)
marked with plastic colour rings, between 16 June - 3 July 2003, the Spoonbills of Sinoe Lake
islands (in the reserve). The action was managed under the International Spoonbill Ringing
Programme and was coordinated by International Spoonbill Working Group.
Overseas, 7 individual Spoonbills were observed: Ukraine, Israel (3 birds), Spain and Oman.
The last capture was registered on the 7th of March 2004 in Turkey. This is the first time when
Spoonbills, ringed in Romania, were seen in Spain or Oman. The bird that reached Oman flew a
distance of 3, 814 km!
This number exceeded the previous number of observed Spoonbills, ringed in Romania between
1946-2002. Only 4 individuals were seen from a total of 1,180 marked with metal rings.
The efficiency of colour ring marking is highly visible - the rings can be seen and read
from a distance. The results of this project offer a better view on the winter range of the
Spoonbill population breeding in the Danube Delta.
We mentioned the importance of ARBDD support that played a decisive role in this ringing
activity and hope to successfully continue the action in 2004 as well.
