6-10-2004: The major event of the World Bird Festival 2004 (dedicated to birds and people) was the European Birdwatch, organized annually by Birdlife International. Between 2-3 October 17.774 people from 30 countries participated in 953 separated events, during witch 3.341.921 birds were observed. This number is a record for the last three years. This year, the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds (BSPB/BirdLife Bulgaria ) coordinated the event on European level.
In Romania , the European Birdwatch 2004 was coordinated by the Romanian Ornithological Society (SOR) , the Birdlife International partner in Romania . According to the last update, 47 birwatching events were organized and a total of 443 people took part. The number of observed species was 192 and the total of counted birds was 564.790. Milvus Group Association for Bird and Nature Protection participated at the event with 46 volunteers, submitted data for 112 bird species and counted 12.340 individuals. Good media coverage of the action was possible due to SOR campaign: 2 reports on one national TV channel, 6 reports on 3 local TV channels, 1 news on one national radio station, 9 news and reports on 5 local radio stations, 2 articles in one national newspaper and 5 articles in 4 local newspapers.
